Unable to View Consumer Key & Consumer Secret in Salesforce External Client App
Last updated November 14, 2025
When setting up the OutboundSync External Client App inside Salesforce, some users may be unable to view the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret. This is typically caused by missing Salesforce permissions.
This article outlines the required permissions and how to resolve the issue.
Cause
Salesforce restricts access to External Client App credentials based on Profile permissions. If the user’s Profile does not include the required permissions, Salesforce hides the Consumer Key and Secret.
Required Salesforce Permissions
To view and manage the External Client App for OutboundSync, the user’s Profile must include the following permissions:
- Create, Edit, and Delete External Client Apps
- View All External Client Apps
- View All External Client Apps, View Their Settings, and Edit Their Policies
These permissions allow Salesforce to surface the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret fields.
How to Fix
- Navigate to Setup → Profiles.
- Select the Profile assigned to the user who is configuring OutboundSync.
- In the permissions list, ensure the following permissions are enabled:
- Create, Edit, and Delete External Client Apps
- View All External Client Apps
- View All External Client Apps, View Their Settings, and Edit Their Policies
- Save changes.
- Have the user log out and log back in (Salesforce may require a refresh of permissions).
- Return to Setup → External Client Apps and open the OutboundSync app, the Consumer Key and Consumer Secret should now be visible.
